Moving From a Tier 1 to Work Permit Visa

The primary UK work permit option for non-EU consultants that want to work in UK was – the Tier 1 highly skilled migrant programme – was essentially abolished in 2011. This means that consultants who were previously on a Tier 1 work permit visa have few options left if they want to continue working in the UK. One option is to work for a consulting firm on a Tier 2 Work Permit.

Is it Possible to Renew a Tier 1 UK Work Permit Visa?

Renewing your Tier 1 UK work permit visa is possible, but you have to qualify under the new regulations for Tier 1 (General) work permit visas. You have to score 95 points or more on the new system to remain on the same tier of visa. There are up 20 points available for your age (under 28s get the full amount), between 30 and 50 for qualifications, up to 80 for previous earnings, five for UK experience and ten for both language and maintenance funds.

Does Changing to a Tier 2 UK Work Permit Visa Make Things Easier?

If you want to work in the UK but aren’t eligible for a Tier 1 work permit visa, you can still work on a Tier 2. It’s a sponsored permit, which means that an employer has to “sponsor” you for the duration of your stay. Your time under the Tier 1 still counts towards your overall time in the UK. Also the Tier 2 visa is more well established and stable than the Tier 1. There have been far fewer changes to the eligibility and requirements for Tier 2 work permits.
